Ludi Musici is a new record label founded in 2006 that specialises mainly in classical music but also explores some areas of “crossover” repertoire – especially repertoire that bridges the gap between classical music and world music. Instead of churning out the kind of “cultural goods” with which the market is already saturated, Ludi Musici offers listeners coherent artistic projects that do not necessarily conform to any particular genre but whose aim is to appeal to the eyes as much as to the ears, and in which the pleasure of listening to the music is complemented by the pleasure of reading about it.
The philosophy of the label is simple: it aims to bring to the attention of the public unusual and varied repertoire from the fields of early music and world music, performed by outstanding artists, accompanied by scholarly and engaging articles, elegant packaging, a substantial and lavishly illustrated booklet, all presented in a sumptuous book/CD format that makes each release an eminently collectable objet d’art that will give its owner hours of pleasure – something to be listened to over and over again, to be read and re-read.
The editorial policy is also based on a simple idea: with the help of the music itself, the individual performers and ensembles, and specially commissioned articles, to ensure that each release tells a story, evokes a musical adventure or moment in time, and brings to life an era, a musical or cultural trend.
With this aim in mind, Ludi Musici brings together musicians who are established international artists and offer fresh insights into the repertoire in question with writers who are not only acknowledged experts but who are also capable of placing the music in its historical context and writing about it in an engaging manner.
Ludi Musici may be seen as a collection of art recordings that venture beyond the usual well-trodden paths. The first release is devoted to Mozart’s second stay in Paris and to the six violin sonatas dating from that period (K301-6).
