foto_mozart.jpgAs a splendid follow up of the Mozart year, the new label Ludi Musici introduces for its first release a true world premiere in a luxurious packaging undoubtedly one of the most interesting Mozart recordings around the Mozart’s year. It is indeed a world premiere, not by the choice of works, but by that of the instruments.

Anton Steck and Marieke Spaans, two soloists among the most exciting musicians performing on period instruments of the moment, attempt to revive the sonatas for violin and keyboard K 301 to 306, composed and published in 1778 in Paris, by interpreting them on period instruments: of course Anton Steck’s baroque violin and an historic bow going back to 1780 especially selected for the recording. But the real star of the recording is a "Tangentenflügel", a tangent piano - an extremely rare instrument of which almost none of still existing the models leaves the museums - and of which one thinks that it could have been used by Mozart himself, at about of the same period as that of the composition of the recorded sonatas (interview of the instrument maker in the booklet). The encounter between the artists and the instrument, born from a blow of heart at the workshop of an instrument maker in Hamburger, evolved into a true love story.

Recorded in January 2006 in a co-production with Deutschland Radio, the six sonatas K 301 to 306 represent the missing link between the made up sonatas of the composer’s childhood and those of his maturity in Vienna: written during a highly emotional period of Mozart’s life, darkened by the pain caused by his mother’s death, the need to free himself from the paternal governance, but also full of love and frustration, progression and regression, small successes and resounding failures, these sonatas will inspire among Mozart’s best fellow composers and successors. Offered in a luminous interpretation, enriched by the colourful and beautiful sound Marieke Spaans’ fingers create with this exceptional instrument, these sonatas, often considered wrongfully as minor works, are available in a prestigious double CD Digibook which not only music lovers, but also amateurs of history will enjo. The booklet presents Mozart’s second stay in Paris, the city of 1778 as Mozart could have seen it, with a series of informative texts, a carefully chosen iconography, interview of the artists and of the instrument maker who discovered and restored the instrument.

A feast for the eyes and the ears.
